It’s been a rather busy week with me, at work and at home. I barely had any time to make anything this week. However, I was able to make the Week 5 of JC100 recipe, Cold Leek & Potato Soup. The recipe is fairly easy and actually a base for many other French soups. It’s also nice during hotter days when you don’t feel like a big meal or anything hot.

On August 15th Julia Child would have turned 100. She is the Lady of Modern American Food preparation and inspired million of people to get into the kitchen with her “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” book, which took her a while to get published. She had a TV show, or rather several I believe, and of course many books. A revival of her persona and her cooking style took place thanks to the movie “Julie & Julia”, in which we see Julie Powell (one of the first food bloggers I dare say) tackles all recipes from the book. Child’s Publisher launches a “JC100” celebration where food bloggers around the world receive a recipes each Monday (before everyone else) to recreate and twist, or stick to the original.
My husband is very particular about his pizza. He hates it when there is almost nothing on there and that’s why he rarely eats pizza out or orders it. A classic Italian pizza would never float his boat and I’m almost certain he would starve in Italy. The only good pizza for him is the one he makes himself. Often that involves a pizza crust bought at the store but this time I was able to convince him I could make that myself. I don’t need those additives that are very likely in them (though I honestly never check, so I am making assumptions here).
Last weekend it was once again time to provide some food for two potlucks. This is always a nice opportunity to make something I haven’t done before. On the other hand it also poses a problem because you never know if someone else will make the same thing. Another question is: main dish or dessert? I like dessert a lot (I am sure you know that by now) but people here tend to bring a lot of dessert. Then it can get a bit problematic if there are not enough main dishes.
Maybe I should rename this month and call it the January Soup month. It seems I am cooking more soup than I am baking bread. I shall attempt to make more bread or buns, but for now, lets stick with this soup. It’s another one of my favourites, I guess that’s what I made it last weekend for the family. It’s also fairly simple.
This soup originates from East European countries and is a very popular dish in East Germany. It is based on a sour flavour from pickle juice and rounded out by sour cream and lemon when served.
