This week we invited some friends out for supper to thank them for helping out last October. We set up the Fondue since we haven’t done that in a while and it’s a lot of fun. You can eat while you talk and not stuff yourself like crazy. The challenge was dessert because one of your friends is living gluten free.

Egg White Cake
Sometimes a recipe asks for only half of the egg, either egg white or egg yolk. That’s ok if it’s only one but if you end up with a lot then you run into a problem. I already had a solution for the egg yolk: chocolate pudding. But what does a girl do if you have a lot of egg whites left over?
Sugar Cake
I am not sure if you know this, but I grew up in the GDR, behind the Iron Curtain so to speak. It were brief 5 years but a culture doesn’t simply disappear, it changes slowly. A lot of things from the GDR culture is gone, although it has seen a revival with so called GDR stores. Anyway, the point is, as any culture, we had certain recipes in the GDR that were and still are quite unique.
Book Review: “Petite Treats” and Wine & Chocolate Lava Cakes
A while ago I received the “Petite Treats – Mini Versions of Your Favorite Baked Delights” by Christy Beaver and Morgan Greenseth. I had little time when I received it to make anything out of that lovely little book, but last Saturday it was the perfect rescue.
Baumkuchen

Pavlova by Helene
Helene is a friend of mine from university. She has no food blog but she is a vivid follower of mine and a great home baker in her own right. She once before guest posted for me about the Easter Cookie cutters she won from my first give away. Give her a warm welcome.
Yeast Dough Nectarine Braid
What to do when you have two nectarines and you don’t really want to eat them? As usual, you use them to bake them. According to my husband this is an awesome recipe and extremely delicious.
Zucchini Lime Cake
Oh, there are so many things to do with zucchini: grill it, put it in salad, bake with it. I decided for the latter this time. But I didn’t want to make a chocolate cake because that seems to be regular thing to do. Facebook to the rescue!
Mandarin Whipping Creme Torte
Yesterday I worked on another cake experiment. Ok, most of my baking is an experiment because most of it never happened in my kitchen before. But, this one was a bit different because the recipes was talking about a big torte and I wanted to make little ones. So, I wasn’t sure if it would work the way I envisioned it nor how much I would get out of it. The result was a success.
Nectarine Biscuit Cake
By now you are, hopefully, aware that I am of German background. Living in Canada can be a challenge sometimes, especially when it comes to cooking and baking. On the other hand, it is nice to see that you can surprise people with things that you are natural to you, like certain dishes. The past weeks I have become a part of a German-Canadian Baking and Cooking Club and as such I am preparing for a baking class.
