Mardi Gras or carnival is starting soon in Germany and one thing, above dressing up, is necessary to celebrate: bismarcks, or as we say in German “Berliner” or “Pfannenkuchen”. There are several terms for the same thing: a doughnut filled with jam.

Croissants on the BBQ

It’s been over a week or so that we had some nasty weather here in Saskatoon. The forecast said something about rain, storm, possibly hail, basically nasty weather. When I drove home it looked more or less ok but I knew it was coming. That day we also planned to have friends over for supper (including their kids). We were still debating on stove or BBQ and while I started on the croissants the power went out.

Waffles

Mini waffle tower.

Waffles are an American staple, just like pancakes, for breakfast. This is a bit unusual for us Germans because we only eat waffles for dessert once in a blue moon and on the Christmas Market. Frankly, I don’t recall having waffles unless it was at the Christmas Market.

But, if you are in Rome do as the Romans, in this case, do as the Canadians when in Canada. Since we found a 4 in one (sandwich, grill, griddle, waffle plates) at Walmart the other day I though I should make some waffles soon. My husband is certainly not opposed to the idea and so I whipped up something today while talking to family back home.

Spitzbuben

The best way I can translate them is “Little Rascals”. I just had to read up on the history of this Christmas cookies. It is from Switzerland but also know to Austria (under a different name) and obviously Germany. That’s the lovely thing about Europe, you travel and see something so you recreate it at home. Or you are a baker/confectioner and you travel to get some experience under you belt and learn different cultural baked goods. (Of course you also have local differences in North American but in Europa it’s amplified.)

Butter Creme Torte

 

My mother-in-law had her birthday and I offered to make the cake. Buttercreme Torte is a family tradition when it comes to birthday cakes, thus I though I should provide my new family with this delight.
