Not lost

In case anyone might wonder: no, I am not lost or gone with the wind. I guess the best term, which is often used, is MIA. Missing in Action! Now, I wish I could say that I am baking and cooking like crazy, that I am making new things and trying new things and writing reviews.

But I am not.

The simple fact is, I am training for a marathon and that training takes a lot of time. It is also quite exhausting and food is to refuel not to look pretty, as least at the moment. My concerns these days are my pace, and the distance and injury related. Food, baking and cooking take the backseat.

However, do not despair, I have posts liked up, or rather, I have cooked and baked, taken pictures but no time to write it down yet. There is also a stack of books on my counter that asked to be reviewed. I also want to re-make old recipes and re-shoot them so you, my reader, has a better idea of the product.

After the FBC conference in April there are many things that I would like to enhance with the blog. As said above, photographs are one thing, re-writing the recipes is another thing. But all of this is work in progress, or rather planning in progress.

I will try to add a new recipe this week for your enjoyment. The marathon is May 26th, a couple of days of rest afterwards and I should be back to my old self.

Thank you for your patients.

What keeps you busy these days?

Happy Baking and Cooking.

Banana Oat Muffins

Banana Oats Muffins

One of my first baking experiences, besides a simple cake, were muffins. I love muffins! They are simple and versatile and fun! Of course there is this rivalry with Cupcakes, but often I find cupcakes too sweet. Muffins on the other hand can be savoury as well. This recipe isn’t, but it’s on my “Baking Bucket List” to make a savoury muffin one day.

Revised: Easter Wreath

Easter Wreath Top

Last year I made an Easter Wreath for my German Language class. This year I thought I revisit that recipe and see how I can improve on it. Since then and now I have actually found fresh yeast and thought I would give it a try.

Mini Cinnamon Cheese Cake with Pecans

Piece of Cheese Cake

This week we invited some friends out for supper to thank them for helping out last October. We set up the Fondue since we haven’t done that in a while and it’s a lot of fun. You can eat while you talk and not stuff yourself like crazy. The challenge was dessert because one of your friends is living gluten free.

Sandwich Cookies with Chocolate Filling

Sandwich Cookies close up

I was asked to make a dainty tray for church and so I am thinking “What to do?” First I thought Whoopie Pies because that was on my mind for a while. But I also wanted to make a mix of things, not just one. Besides, I had some things left over.

Egg White Cake

Cake with Egg Whites

Sometimes a recipe asks for only half of the egg, either egg white or egg yolk. That’s ok if it’s only one but if you end up with a lot then you run into a problem. I already had a solution for the egg yolk: chocolate pudding. But what does a girl do if you have a lot of egg whites left over?

Instagram Cookies

Last year a friend asked me to make some snacks for her. She opened her own photography studio with some friends of hers. It was a Grand Opening and she wanted me to make some sweet snacks for the party. I made Chocolate Brownie Cupcakes, Raspberry Cake Pops as well as these Instagram Cookies.

Bismarck Doughnuts

Home made Bismarck cut

Mardi Gras or carnival is starting soon in Germany and one thing, above dressing up, is necessary to celebrate: bismarcks, or as we say in German “Berliner” or “Pfannenkuchen”. There are several terms for the same thing: a doughnut filled with jam.

Sugar Cake

I am not sure if you know this, but I grew up in the GDR, behind the Iron Curtain so to speak. It were brief 5 years but a culture doesn’t simply disappear, it changes slowly. A lot of things from the GDR culture is gone, although it has seen a revival with so called GDR stores. Anyway, the point is, as any culture, we had certain recipes in the GDR that were and still are quite unique.

Book Review: “Petite Treats” and Wine & Chocolate Lava Cakes

DSC_2914

A while ago I received the “Petite Treats – Mini Versions of Your Favorite Baked Delights” by Christy Beaver and Morgan Greenseth. I had little time when I received it to make anything out of that lovely little book, but last Saturday it was the perfect rescue.
