I had some cheese left over from making Goldfish Crackers (see the recipe for those here). Those are fun to make though a bit tedious because the cutter is small. What to do with left over cheese? Besides eating it as it is, which I am not fan of, I thought I could do some more baking with it. A quick look into one baking book and voilá I have a cheese bun recipe.
German Waffles
Some might remember the post about Waffles I made mid February. (Check out the post here.) Those waffles were a North American recipes I got out of my Canadian cook book. But it reminded me that my aunt also used to make waffles. Not on a regular breakfast basis like they do over here. Waffles back home are a bit more of a dessert thing.
Applesauce Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Icing
Applesauce and cream cheese icing, goes together really good.
What do you do if you have left over cream cheese icing? You search your cupcake book and find out that it has a great index. It not just give you a list of its recipes, no, it even tells you what icing goes with what cupcake. So, I find the Applesauce cupcakes which finish nice with cream cheese icing. Lucky for me it also uses buttermilk, which I had a hint sitting in my fridge. Anyway, I love apples and applesauce, actually one of my favourite baked goods is an applesauce muffin, but that’s a story for another time.
The Man in the Kitchen
Baking and cooking produces two things: food and dirty dishes. We all like the food but no one really likes doing the dishes afterwards. If you have a dishwasher you are one of the lucky people, if you are like me, you don’t have one. I am one of those people who doesn’t like doing the dishes but will do them of course when necessary. But fortunately I have a husband, he’s my man in the kitchen.
German Cheese Cake
This is a classic in Germany and North America has something similar. But our cheese cake is made with quark. What’s that you ask? Well, it’s a sour milk product and is used often in Germany. You can use it for baking but you can also mix it up with some herbs and put it on your dark bread, or eat it with baked potatoes.
If you liked to know more then check out the Wikipedia page about Quark or look at this chart and see how it is related to other milk products. That will give you some insight.
I had nieces and a nephew over and I figured with this type of “cake” would be easy enough for them to make. It went pretty well but I had no time to take extra pictures.
Heart Cake Pops
Time to post another Valentine’s Day baked good. I know, the day has passed already but why not make those little ones for other occasions. You could make them for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, random occasion to tell someone you love him/her. Hearts are not just for Valentine’s Day, the are for any occasion.
Schokoküsse
You don’t speak German to understand, well, here’s the English word for word translation: chocolate kisses. No, not Hershey’s Kisses… The dictionary says: chocolate marshmallows or small chocolate-covered cream cake. But neither of those do the thing justice. So the only thing I can think of is giving you the German name…and a pictures of course. Those are the ones I made but they are not looking like the ones from the store, obviously. It’s a bit tricky but stay with me because it’s a fun and different treat.
Red Velvet Cake
I don’t know what the hype is about the Red Velvet Cake. It seems to be a big thing on this side of the planet, for whatever reason. For me, it’s a cake with red colour, that’s it. I doesn’t taste like anything special, at least I didn’t notice. But, I admit, it looks pretty and is very appropriate for Valentine’s Day.
Heart Shaped Doughnuts
I like various shaped baking pans, not the big ones but also the little molds that look like roses or whatever. Not so long ago I went to the bulk barn and they had heart shaped doughnut pans. I had to get that, it was just too cute. The mold is from Wiltons and obviously it’s for Valentine’s Day, and I will use it as such.
From Scratch
The other day on Facebook one of the pages I “like” posted a link called “Why From-Scratch cakes are Healthier than Box Mix Cakes”. Immediately I was all ears or rather eyes and read through the rather short post. (This is the link.)
