The last week it was fairly warm over here in Saskatoon. In fact, it was so warm that I kept the window open over night. For some reason or another that makes me sleep better and I am much more refreshed in the morning. As a result, I got up at 6 a.m. (for some that is early, for others it’s late) and made pancakes from scratch. For some reason I thought pancakes are naturally made with buttermilk. When looking in my Canadian Cook Book though there was no Buttermilk Pancake recipes to be found.

Chocolate Bretzel Pockets filled with Peanut Butter
Oh my! I know, this sounds big. It is, for me anyway and it’s Bulk Barn’s fault. They have those in their bulk bins and I can not resist them and are gone quickly once I bought them. Honestly, how genius is this anyway? Chocolate, pretzels and peanut butter combine – that’s heaven. But how to make them at home? Is there a possibility? There has to be a recipe somewhere!
Seed Muffins
What is a good breakfast muffin? One that is not too sweet but also not too wacky, like mushroom or garlic muffins? Browsing through my muffin cook book I stumbled upon the Seed Muffin with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds. We all know that seeds contain good oils that the body needs, so I thought this would be great to kick off the day.
Maple Syrup and Pecan Muffins
This, my dear readers, is a very Canadian recipe though it comes from a very German cook book. I love it when you can tweak recipes to make them your own. I should do more things like that, more experiments so to speak.
The original recipes is with walnuts, but since I had none I just used pecans. They are pretty close to walnuts but have a less walnutty flavour. I find walnuts always a bit too bitter, so pecans work much better for me.
Leipziger Lerche – A Local Specialty
Give me a drum roll please! Here it comes! The one and only Leipiger Lerche (Leipzig Lark) recipes is finally here. I have already shared enough cupcake recipes, like this, this, and this. But up until now I had no real occasion to make the other half of my blog title: Leipziger Lerchen. It’s like, well, actually there is nothing I can compare it with. See for yourself.

For some, making a cake can be challenging because they never baked before, or think making a cake is difficult. I encourage you to try it and maybe start with a box mix (though I am not a fan it is nice for someone who just starts). The next step after a simple cake is a) a more difficult cake (lets say with layers) or a themed cake for a specific party. It can be scary at times because it seems so complicated. Melissa from “The Party Works” was so kind to write a little post about how a themed cake can be very simple.
Freshly Pressed – I wish
The current “Freshly Pressed” list.
The first thing you will notice when going to WordPress is their front page with the “Freshly Pressed” blogs. At first, I didn’t quite understood this but thought it was nice. Several topics are always presented, like travel, food, books, movies etc. It’s interesting to see what is out there, what people write about and what moves them. This was before I had my own WordPress account.
Carnival Cupcakes
Making desserts for parties is always fun, especially when you have a themed party. Remember the the Lalaloopsy Cake Pops? Those were for a Lalaloopsy birthday party and a lot of fun to do (besides the amount of work of course). A while ago a cousin asked me if I would make some cupcakes for her daughter’s birthday party. The theme was Carnival. Oh my! What to do with that? I immediately thought of colours of course, fun and something different. A little bit of browsing the internet and thinking about what my cupcake cook books had in store I found the recipe.
Black Forest Torte
Chocolate, fruit and whipped cream…what else do you need?
Last Sunday was crazy with two parties to attend and to cater to. The first party was a birthday part with a carnival theme (post will follow), the second party was a bridal shower. Now, we don’t really do bridal showers in Germany. We have a party for everyone before the wedding, e.g. wedding eve party. Your friends and family come together and bring gifts, have a good time, smash some porcelain for good luck and just celebrate. Since I am not too familiar with bridal showers I was wondering what to do. First question for the bride to be: What do you want?
Review: Brownie Liners
In December I went to visit some family in Victoria, BC. Located in that area is SweetArt Supplies, which carries an abundance of baking stuff. Everything from cup cake liners to lollipop sticks to cookie cutter to colours. You name it, they have it. I came to the store because of push pops (another story to review) because you can’t get them in Canada that easily and US shipping will kill you.
Anyway, I visit them and was warmly greeted by Gwen who is running the show. I think we spend several hours talking about baking, supplies and life in general. Besides push pops I took Batter Babies home (look here for recipe/review) and these liners that Gwen gave to me. What better way to use them than to make Guinness Brownies with them?
